Behind
the glassed windows of their palaces, the
absolute monarchs live well. They
have all the pleasures which come
with the control of their subjects,
without the occasional democratic
inconvenience of elections or separation
of powers. In person, they can be
quite charming.
The profusion of guards and autocrat's
own regiments ensures that the status
quo persists. For a cut of the taxes,
the official state religion happily
confirms the divine right of the
ruler.
The doubters get treated to more direct measures of persuasion. Sometimes
the opposition returns the favor with stiletto and poison.
