Liberty Training Rifle

The long-awaited Marlin 795LTR is finally in production and will be available shortly. The concept of Liberty Training Rifle is best explained on the Appleseed site.

The rifle comes with two magazines, a canvas sling and adjustable Tech Sights.

I used to own a regular 795 carbine. This model is a considerable improvement, mainly in the sights and sling swivels.

I didn’t know they had tech sights for the 795, I’ll have to get some. Just wish those magazines were more common.

Very nice and the features are depicted beautifully in those photos. Unfortunately, I have to admit to being one of the 1o/22 sheeple. One thing I always preferred is the flush rotary magazine. And with all the aftermarket options, I can probably make a 10/22 analog of the LTR. Of course, the bolt hold-back on the 10/22 still stinks and practically nothing can be done about that. The bolt hold-back on the 795 looks like a much better design.

Is this a model that Marlin will be selling? As you know, Alicia is an Appleseed Shoot Boss and we have 6 795’s setup for Appleseed loaners. There is a local gunsmith who will cut the stock down. He cuts the plastic stock, shapes a piece of wood to go in the end. This provides a new attachment point for the sling and the but plate. The wood is epoxied in. The butt plate is trimmed and attached and then the end of the stock is repainted. We shortened them for the grandkids and to loan to kids and small women at Appleseed shoots.

The Marlin’s are not as durable as the Ruger 10/22s but I have found them to be more accurate out of the box and we have been able to purchase them, get a sling, put on tech sights or a scope, and cut the stock for a total of no more than $200.

Oh thanks, I really didn’t need another item on my wish list.

Oleg I can’t thank you enough for the beautiful imagery. As you know this was something of an endurance race for some of the folks involved and the pictures just look fantastic. Great icing for the cake.

As someone who’s made their M795 into an LTR here’s a hint that might help someone. When you’re slung up be careful not to put any pressure on that exposed magazine. You WILL have feed issues if you do. Once you’re aware of it, it’s not a problem. I didn’t find out about this until I was using my M795 at an Appleseed.

Unfortunately I’m at the point in life where a scope is seriously considered….

Just look at that grin… Someone had a blast that day! (pun fully intended)

Love the LTR/Appleseed setup. I enjoy the 795 almost as much as my 11yr old, who shoots it far better than me.

Gripes: Even well maintained and cleaned, bolt hold open is questionable in function. Loading mags for an afternoon results in raw fingertips. These are minor inconveniences, all of them, and it’s a great accurate and inexpensive rifle. Now where can I find some more .22lr?

  9. dart67eb says:

As an Appleseed SB, I run two of these as loaners. The rifle’s biggest problems are the mags not dropping free and the trigger guard cracking when overtorqued. Both easily solved. Tey aslo run better when you actually clean them after each shoot. (Go figure!) This is a great rifle for the youngsters due to its light weight. I just cut off the sock at the sling swivel and duct taped it. Hokey, but it works. I hope someone makes an adjustable stock for it soon.

dart, there is an adjustable stock for a Marlin 60 floating around on various sights on the internet. I believe it would just need a hole drilled out for the mags to be usable with a 795.

Oleg, beautiful pics of the new LTR. I hope it is ok that I copied the pics locally. I want to make prints to show the larger gun shops in central Ohio to start drumming up orders for Marlin and Appleseed. As a red hat, I think this is a good “seventh step” activity. Let me know if there are any issues on this use of your images.

  12. This concept should be applied to the 10/22. I doubt I’d be alone in that sentiment.

  13. Huff says:

The early .22 LTRs were 10/22s due mostly to the availability of aftermarket parts. Thousands of instructors and students have put together 10/22 LTRs. Ruger had a chance to get involved with this but their pricing structure prevented it from being feasible to both parties and they didn’t engage the project on a philosophical level. Marlin jumped in with both feet from the get go. I would hazard a guess that keeping an eye on Pro Mag over the course of the next year will showing a growing availability of aftermarket parts for the 795.

  14. Contrarian View` says:

Congratulations and thanks to Marlin for having the vision. I am surprised that Ruger failed to jump on this concept years ago. The 795 is an outstanding rifle, and with the LTR features and Appleseed affiliation I hope it will get the recognition it deserves.

Would love to buy one for my wife in a left hand model.
