Sterling type 2 semi-auto carbine

This is one of the few semi-auto arms I like as much as the select-fire original. It’s longer barrel (16″ vs. 10″) gives it a longer sight radius, and the two-flip aperture is more familiar than the quaint diffusion disk sight of the original. Close-bolt firing means rather better accuracy: at 25 yards, the entire 34rd magazine goes into one 2″ hole. The folding stock is among the most solid of any carbine. Central balances allows easy one-hand control. Magazines are reliable and easy to load. The only down side is the all-metal construction can get hot or cold, depending on your climate. A para cord or an inner tube wrap solves that concern.

“Home Defense” isn’t about homes.

Back cover for the new on-line Home Defense magazine. It’s another project of Delta Media, along with the United States Concealed Carry Association.

Rifles shown: (left) left-hand Rock River AR15 with X5L light/laser and DSA FAL with a heavy barrel. Both are using EOTech red dots sights. Magpul AFG and Emag on the AR, VFG on the FAL.

Steyr C9-A1

Way back in 2002 or so, I tried a Steyr M9. I liked the trigger, the thin comfortable grip and the lack of recoil, wasn’t sure about the sights and really did not care for the safety lever placement. Ten years later, I get to play with the A1 version of all three variants, full size M, shorter than but full-capacity C and small S). The annoying safety has been omitted, the rest is the same as before. I am a slightly better pistol shot now, so I will give the sights another try.

Dennis at Dragon Leather works made a velociraptor hide belt holster that fits all 9mm and .40 variants. It is long enough to enclose the entire full-length slide.

Girl looking for an apartment in Nashville.

One of my favorite Knoxville models is considering a move to Nashville. Does anyone need a roommate or know of a small apartment available?

Bersa Thunder 9

Had a chance to shoot this 17-shot 9mm pistol recently. Interesting weapons, a pistol equivalent of police Crown Victoria Interceptor, heavy, solid and reliable. Quite accurate, with very minimal recoil. I used it to train a new shooter who found even a smooth-shooting HK P7PSP a bit much. If you like DA/SA pistols with a decocker safety, this pistol would work very well. At $400 with two magazine, it’s not too expensive.

Thunder 9 rides well in a Galco belt holster.

Language as a weapon.

Looking at the current conflicts, it seems that counties with common languages enjoy a major PR advantage in wartime. Countries like Albania and Georgia have to resort to other languages (English and Russian, respectively) to get their version of the events out. Who outside of RSA has ever read the Boer version of the events of the 1899 war? Who outside of Pakistan knows much about the Afghan perspective on the current war?

Three questions and requests.

I’d like to get in touch with Gary Johnson’s (LP) marketing/PR team to offer my photography services. I think the visuals on his web site and print materials can be much improved and I would be willing to provide the time. If you have the contact info, please share or make an introduction.

Does anyone know what was the first car model to have a designation that wasn’t either sequential (Model A, B or 1,2,3) or descriptive (such as “touring car”)?

I am still looking for a TGS-104 video cable or a functional equivalent. If none are available for purchase, could I have one custom made?

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.

Or something like that…

Does anyone know what species this is?

(The composition was actually noticed by April, so the credit for the idea goes to her.)

You can’t ride like that!

These two are well equipped for the the less common human road hazards, but they are missing leather and helmets for the more usual perils. It takes both — and good judgment — to be safe.

2016 CAFE rules.

I get a distinct impression that USGov is deliberately trying to make cars too expensive for the majority of the population. The so-called “clunker” destruction reduced the availability of inexpensive used vehicles. CAFE rules on fuel efficiency slated for 2016 phase-in would be the end of simpler, lower-maintenance engines. I wonder what can be done to arrest this undesirable trend.

Men with swords.

Unlike Czechia, Hungary is not a gun friendly country. That may be why I saw more swords than handguns during my visit.

Beggars

When in Prague, I was surprised that all but one of the fairly numerous beggars I saw were apparently able-bodied young men. These two were typical examples.

I don’t know why they were out begging when others were not visible? Could be that shelters prohibit pets, could be that they prohibit drugs or alcohol, could be that these men are transients, could be many reasons…but I am so used to beggars being more typically old folks, women with kids and others less immediately considered capable of fending for themselves. And people did give fairly generously to them. Any insights?

Unlike US pandhandlers who are usually confrontational, Czech beggars had a ritualized manner of bowing deeply enough to keep their faces mostly covered, with hat or bowl held out with both hands.

Iver Johnson Sealed 8 revolver

Model 844, 1950s production. The backs of the chambers are recessed to enclose the case heads, which isn’t a bad idea with rimfire cartridges. The front of the cylinder is extended to reduce the forcing cone flash.

Ejection of all eight rounds is simultaneous.

The front sight is adjustable for elevation.

Famous gun writer, retired Marine Corps Major Tom Kill.

The illustrious comrade in arms of Major Caudill, Tom Kill…err, Tamara Keel of View From The Porch blog is writing an article about Boberg XR9-S for Concealed Carry magazine. I got to photograph her on the secret Lunar base right after she test fired the guns to evaluate their performance in reduced gravity. Photos of her with Professor de la Paz coming shortly.
