The perceived inadequacy of M1 carbine
M1 carbine is often called the “girlfriend gun” for its compact size and low recoil. It’s as often derided for the perceived lack of stopping power. We decided to test it side by side with .223, 9×19 and 10mm Auto. … Continue reading

M1A’s little sister
We test-fired the Mini-14 and a 20″ Colt HBAR earlier. With 55gr ball, the AR15 mounting a 1-4x Trijicon Accupoint yielded 3″ groups at 100. Mini-14 shot 2″ groups with 2.5x Leupold scout scope, shown above on the M1A. So … Continue reading
Rich girl
By today’s measures, a brick of .22 is almost as enviable as a belt full of .600 Nitro Express a decade ago… Photo from last week’s range day here in Tennessee. The pistol is Bersa Thunder .22 — pretty good … Continue reading

S&W317 “kit gun” with a 3″ barrel has long been an object of desire for me, for all kinds of subjective reasons. I could never quite justify buying one for myself. A week ago, good friends gave me theirs as … Continue reading
Know your weapon’s trajectory: new on AllOutdoor
Use the reticle for range compensation and more accurate shooting. I think this is one of my most informative articles.
Less expensive shooting practice
Range time consists of three major expenses: range fees, travel time and ammunition. I shoot on friends’ farms, so the fees aren’t an issue. Ammunition, that I have. I’ve been a packrat a long time, and I no longer do … Continue reading

6.5 Swedish already has a reputation for good accuracy
So I am curious, just how much more accurate would match loads in that caliber be? Would the limit of accuracy be dictated by the open sights? I am also curious why match ammo is lighter than the standard ball … Continue reading

An observation about .410 defensive shotguns
Yesterday, I had a chance to play with Mossberg 500HD, a .410 pump designed for defense. We test-fired a whole bunch of ammo types at the IDTS 3D target and more at an old cooking pan, some rotten logs and … Continue reading

UTS15
UTS15 with EOTech holographic sight. Stoked with a mix of Rio 00 buck and slugs in a Comp-tac carrier on Minotaur belt. Backup pistol is a Glock 23 in a DragonLeather Flatjack holster.
Made with the finest child labor
Why use mechanical loaders when a voice-directed self-propelled model is available? Previous software revisions here.
Where 22Magnum excels.
22WMR is hardly an efficient pistol caliber, most of the time. The exception is when it’s used with CCI Gold Dots or other loads made just for short barrels. Then it becomes usable, if not ideal, for self-defense. The plus … Continue reading

The main reason for Coonan popularity
Coonan pistols in particular are very accurate, have good triggers and tame the .357 recoil well — especially when compensated. Absence of barrel to cylinder gap means no pressure loss, so muzzle velocity of 1400fps with 158gr and 1600fps with … Continue reading
Smaller caliber and less magazine capacity? Not likely!
My new toy. Flush magazines hold 12 rounds of 45ACP, extended hold 14. This pistol is tighter than any custom 1911 I’ve handled.
Visual odds and ends
338 Spectre 250gr soft point and 300gr match ammo. The original STG44-22 imported by ATI. They are now bringing in an improved version with more metal and less plastic in it.
Uzi loaded with tracers
Wherever he is, John Galt probably prefers a weapon with more range. The Uzi, especially with the solid wooden stock, does work all right to about 100 meters. A little more forward lean would have been nice, but it worked … Continue reading

One gun, two cylinders.
Ted Nugent branded .45Colt — 260gr at 800fps. Nice short-range hunting round. The revolver is a Ruger Blackhawk with pewter grips If .45Colt is unavailable, a mild 200gr plated plinking load in 45ACP is an option. Or any other round … Continue reading
Great leather for a non-mainstream carry gun
Recently, two of my good friends married each other. Since I was responsible for the introduction, I took photos of the ceremony. I also wanted to come up with memorable wedding presents that would still be in use years later. … Continue reading
