   Absolutely hating the new version of the handguards.

   Obviously done to extend forward, and possibly for strength, but the prototype’s were the bee’s knees, and this looks like it was done by a 10-year-old using a 3D modeling program for their first time.

   I just pray they at least shape it up a bit like the RFB before release. Absolutely hideous.

     I am trying to remember how the old handguards looked. Some of the flaring was added to make charging the rifle easier and to keep hands off the barrel. Overall, the ergonomics got a lot better since last December.

     A few more things.

     I realized they might have done it so that a .30 barrel (.308, 7.62×39) will fit, where that might not have worked with the original. So there’s also that.

     But it also looks like this version will prevent some suppressors from being installed properly. It definitely looks like they could have designed it with a significant cutout radius akin to free-floated AR guards, to allow (but not direct) users to SBR & suppress it, while still getting the extra room. And now I’m wondering if having a sling attached to those rings would end up scratching up a suppressor.

     Definitely not a fan.

       The sling openings now stand off from the barrel considerably. And you can pick either 17.2 or 20 inch barrels, so reflex suppressors work with the latter.

   Not to be (overly) pedantic, but if one is shooting from one’s right shoulder, wouldn’t the cover be on the left?

   Just how sturdy are those corner loops the sling clips to? That design doesn\’t fill me with confidence. I would want them to be reinforced with a bit of metal, considering the location and probable stress they will end up dealing with. Don\’t forget, that sling clip adds some leverage to any force applied to it. Drooped over, and then smacked hard against a solid surface, and that plastic may crack. If all that connected to the corner was parachute line, or similar, not so bad. But the mount should not be weaker than the strap assembly (hook/clip) connector.

     We will find out, but given the substantial thickness of the plastic, it might work out ok in the long run. Earlier designs had metal imbedded into the plastic which seemed less strong to me.
