It brings out the battle-ready beast in men!

While 30-30 was not the first smokeless cartridge in wide use, it was the first one for the US. It’s an indication of the correct approach to small arms that American civilians it before the Army, while in Europe it was the other way around. The USMC and the Navy did adopt the long-forgotten 6mm Lee smokeless round about the same time.

I do like the 30-30 (“thuddy-thuddy” or is it “turdy-turdy”?) carbine. 170 grains at 2,000 is quite adequate for most tasks, and the leverguns chambered for it are super handy.

I found a use for the saddle ring on my Winchester; single point sling attachment. It’s perfect for that role, ifn you need to carry the piece for extended periods and occasionally have both hands free. When I hunted with it I never used a sling, though on a back-packing trip it would be just the thing.

The Winchester carbines and trappers are a great woods carry rifle. Slim, light and short with very moderate recoil and report. It is no wonder they sold so well.

The 30-30 cartridge – the bullet construction is great for hunters of thin skinned game (i.e. deer), the bullet construction is perfect for the velocity. No bullet blow ups or failure to expand – just great performance. Inside of 150 yards – near perfection.

The bullet. According to Kipling, you’re supposed to “bite the bullet.”
