Place to stay in Houston

I am seeking suggestions on where to stay in Houston during the NRA convention (May 3-5). I am not familiar with the city, so specific suggestions are welcome.

(Update: local hospitality extended and accepted.)

Not a specific recommendation but a tip: Houston is really big, the city limits (628 sq. mi.) encompasses an area half the size of the state of Road Island (1,214 sq. mi.) and the metropolitan urban area (1,295 sq. mi.) is bigger than that. And the traffic sucks. You can find a hotel that is actually in Houston and still be an hour away from the convention center.

If you don’t want to stay downtown near the convention center, your best bet is a hotel on or near the 610 loop, the innermost highway circle. You can get to the convention center within 30 minutes from almost anywhere in that circle as long as it’s not weekday rush hour.

  2. I found that the cost of the hotels near the convention center to be outrageous. Friends who either live or work in Houston suggested to find a hotel near either the Galleria or the Texas Medical Center. They suggested avoiding the university area.

I’m staying at the Sonesta Suites near the Galleria for $95 a night. The hotel adjoining the George Brown Convention Center was over $400 a night. I have to have a rental car but I’m taking a few extra days to visit relatives in the area.

If you’re renting a car so as to be mobile, Galveston is only an hour South of the Convention Center. You flyin’ solo, or traveling with company?

I currently live in Conroe Texads which is 45 minutes north of Houston. Born and raise, ignore the advice about staying in the loop, while the younger yuppie crowd thinks it is the place to be, it sucks, stay north of Houston, preferably The Woodlands, Shanendoh area, like the 45 and 242 area. Or stay in the 288 and Hwy 6 area, like Pearland. Both locations have excellent hotels and great food venues, and are about 45 minutes from the GRB convention center.

Stay in Sugar Land about 20 miles from the Convention Center. It’s a great Texas town with all the comforts of home; good food, great beer and some of the friendliest folks you’d ever want to know. The Marriott Town Center is nice (but expensive) but the Holiday Inn is reasonable. While you’re in town, look me up and we’ll talk photography, guns and gun photography. What more could you ask for?

If you’re arriving via IAH there are many lodging places close by the airport and about 20 minutes from the convention hall…all the major chains are represented…

I echo what Jason said. I was in town for a few days, and stayed in the The Woodlands, nice area.

And while Houston has a ton of places to eat, I recommend “The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation” (www.ninfas.com) which is near downtown.
