Censorship.

A journal I follow had a note: “Livejournal is blocked in Kyrgystan, Kazahkstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, so apologies for the long delay and if I have neglected you guys.” So there’s a definite USSR flavor to some segments of it. Looks like the “stans” got somewhat  worse than even the original empire, while the Baltics got better in many ways. Even Russia got better by far than the USSR was, despite the claims otherwise by many. At least it’s possible to communicate with the rest of the world now, and there’s a realistic option for leaving the country which was absent during most of my time there.

Meanwhile; “We have to change our history” says Michelle Obama. And there are Americans who agree with her.

I guess the “stans” suffer from having communist party bosses even after the empire evaporated and the communists supposedly did too. It probably didn’t help that they were conquered so long ago — unlike the Baltics, where people remembered independence as fairly recent history.
The fact that old communist party boss Putin is trying to resurrect the empire undoubtedly isn’t helping matters.
